Value and Nurture Are Scams
‘Deliver value’
An oft trotted out line.
If you're producing content then you are likely thinking about how you deliver value. That's a common mistake.
The logic goes that if you deliver lots of value then eventually someone will plonk down some money to work with you to get more value.
They call it 'nurture'.
And it’s a faulty premise.
Because value seekers are bias seekers.
They have a fixed idea of what they think the path should look like and seek information that validated that.
Anything that doesn’t conform to this bias is dismissed as valueless.
The interesting thing is if you often question these people on the nature of their current beleifs they are build on sand.
Yet they cling to them tightly.
If you’re in the business of change then this is a recipe for disaster.
Selling change to the value seeking crowd is always an exercise in frustration.
I got a messages from someone who watched an overview of the model that’s got me to a very profitable run rate very quickly.
Hundreds of people have watched it already. 'wow disappointing. Zero value'
There is zero judgement on the individual. I’m willing to bet more than a few felt exactly the same as him. 9 mins of their lives I stole from them. But the words they use demonstrate they had an expectation before they watched it. They were looking for something that conformed to this bias.
But I’m more interested in the people who got an insight and reached out to me to help them build something similar.
They weren’t demanding value or an exact step by step map.
Just open to insights that when given context they could turn into value themselves.
These people make great clients and partners.
They also build a great community as we’re seeing inside The Syndicate as their willingness to share their own insights and journey is very high.
Beware those who seek value. They have already made up their mind. Avoid those who demand value before a commitment is made and definition is established. You could spend time trying to change their mind or you could just find those who's minds are open.
