BE + DO: Coaching, Consulting and Mentorship
I have personally sold coaching, consulting and mentorship to 6195 people.
Hundreds of people got results. Many life changing results.
Thousands didn’t.
I worked with some people for days. Some (still) for years.
Some invested $7. Some $150,000.
Business coaching and mentorship takes many forms.
Leave aside the product, person, promise, investment and dozens of other variables.
Every person who got a result combined two things.
Every person who didn’t, only got one.
Queue direct statement:
If your coach or mentor is only telling you what do DO.
They aren’t your coach.
They are a consultant you’re paying to solve a problem YOU perceive you have.
A coach shows you who you need to BE to get the result from the things they are teaching you to DO.
A mentor embodies who they are BEING to get the result from the things they DO.
The coaching industry as a whole has created a level of learned helplessness that’s rivalling the tertiary education scam.
Failure rates far outstrip success rates.
It’s unconsciously perceived that dependency is the best business model.
“If I only teach them what to DO then that’s ever evolving and I can keep selling them the DO.
”
The fear of showing them who they need to BE is they become that person and no longer need you. (therefore stop paying you)
This constructed narrative goes against natural laws.
As organisms grow they seek new environments to continue to grow.
Hermit crabs get new shells
Kids leave home.
Coaching clients leave your coaching.
This is healthy and natural.
It’s a sign of success. Not failure.
If you’re here to sell stuff then you can stay in the DO.
It ‘works’.
If you’re here for the impact you say you are, and you want to create value beyond a transaction the equation is simple.
BE + DO
Ironically you will create and capture more value than you can imagine.

I'm always glad to see you writing these distinction articles... Maybe people will listen, but I guess the market will sort it all out eventually.
